When her friend signs up for a self-defense class as part of her recovery after an attack, Amery joins her for support. That's where she meets him. Ronin Black, owner of the dojo, is so drawn to Amery that he takes over her training - in public and in private. The enigmatic Ronin pushes Amery's boundaries from the start, and with each new tryst, Amery becomes addicted to the pleasure and to him.

First Thought

Holy Moly! Ronin Black can be my Sensei!

BDSM?

Not so much, IMO. There’s no spanking or other harder core elements that I’ve read in BDSM. Ronin practices Shibari/Kinbaku, which is Japanese bondage. The use of Shibari/Kinbaku is not just a sexual kink, it’s an art form. Ronin lives and breathes many things that’s part of his Japanese heritage. He owns and runs his own dojo and then in his very private life his passion is ropes. Ronin is very much an alpha male that feels the need to be in control in all parts of his life and the bedroom or his practice room is no exception.

Why I LOVED This Book

Even though Amery is naive and not confident in her sexuality due to her childhood as a preacher’s kid she is still no virginal heroine was very refreshing. Amery is a strong and independent 28 year woman with her own business. She’s not whiny like some women can be in this genre. Sure there was time that I was thinking she needed to get  a clue about Ronin and the secrets he was hiding but I never thought she was one of those female characters that was “too stupid to live”. I liked she didn’t take all of Ronin’s crap and called him on many of his actions.

Just like Amery, Ronin is not the typical male lead that I’ve read in this genre. Sure he’s tall, dark and yummy but he is also dangerous and mysterious. But he is a man who has earned all the things he has and is not a spoiled rich brat. Far from it. He is 38 and very successful in his profession of a dojo owner. He not only teaches the ways of jiu-jitsu and  Shibari/Kinbaku but he lives the beliefs they teaches.

I absolutely love the fire that Amery and Ronin share. They start off butting heads in Ronin’s dojo when Amery doesn’t take the self defense class as serious as she should. Ronin quickly lets her know what the rules are and that she is to only address him as Sir, Sensei or Master Black when she is in his dojo.

Final Thought

In a flooded genre Lorelei James’ writing and strong characters stands apart from others I’ve read. It only took me a few chapters into Bound to be hooked. After I finished listening to the last CD of Bound I was putting CD 1 of book 2, UnWound into the player. I only stopped listening long enough to write this review.

Narration:

I’ll have to admit that 80% of the reason I requested Bound for review is because Luke Daniels is listed as one of the narrators. I thought that Bound was going to which POVs since there was two narrators. So as I wanted for Daniels voice to blast in my ears I got swept away by Rachel Vivette’s narration. She is now on my favorites list for narrators. She was AWESOME! She is what I consider a unicorn amount narrators. Unicorn? WTH is that? It’s a narrator that can pull off both sexes to perfection. Her name voices was just as if not better than her female voices.

Vivette’s can pitch her voice high and “girlie” for that young and naive female characters and lower it for the sexy and cocky male characters.

As far as Luke Daniels he’s always fun to listen to but he only narrates the end of the book when it switches to Ronin’s POV. But he narrates all of book 2, Unwound. So that leads me to believe that much of Unwoundwill be from Ronin’s POV. YAY!

What’s Shibari/Kinbaku?

While listening to Bound I Googled Shibari/Kinbaku to see what it was all about. Here is a few websites I found on the subject if you’re interested.

Kinbaku Luxuria

About Lorelei James

Lorelei James

Lorelei James is the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of contemporary erotic western romances set in the modern day Wild West and also contemporary erotic romances. Lorelei’s books have been nominated for and won the Romantic Times Reviewer’s choice Award, as well as the CAPA Award. Lorelei lives in western South Dakota with her family…and a whole closet full of cow girl boots.

Why do I have a particular fondness for all things western? Well, I’m a fourth generation South Dakotan, living in the Black Hills, which is chock-full of interesting characters, including cowboys, Indians, ranchers, and bikers. The geographical diversity of the surrounding area showcases mountains, plains, and badlands. Living in and writing about rural settings gives me a unique perspective, especially since I’m not writing historical westerns. Through my fictional world, I can show the ideals and the cowboy way of life are still very much alive.
