One Hot Alpha! Interview with Rook McQueen from Black Rook by Kelly Meade

One Hot Alpha! Interview with Rook McQueen from Black Rook by Kelly Meade

Cornerstone Run is a paranormal romance trilogy, set in a world of hidden loup garou, their mystical Magi enemies, and the occasional vampire. The small, reclusive town of Cornerstone, Pennsylvania, houses an almost entirely loup garou population—one of only thirteen towns around the country that serve as a sanctuary for their nonhuman inhabitants, where the loup garou are free to be themselves. When a neighboring sanctuary town is attacked by a vicious, unknown enemy, the three sons of Cornerstone’s Alpha must stand together to protect their people—and the women who steal their hearts.

Meet Rook McQueen

Name: Rook McQueen
Height: 6′
Weight: 190 lbs.
Hair color: Dark brown
Eye color: brown with copper flecks

Other Physical features: (like tattoos, pierces, etc.) 00 steel gauges in both ears. One of tattoo starts below the right ear and wraps down the neck to the forearm. The other one is only on the left forearm and bicep. They look tribal, but are actually Sanskrit translations of song lyrics.

Hobbies: Playing the guitar, writing music, irritating brother Knight, generally avoiding brother Bishop, and trying to prove himself to his father.

So you’re a musician. Tell us a little about you style of music.

My preferred style is alternative rock with a leaning toward alt-metal, which is what my college band played. I like mixing distorted guitar riffs with melodic vocals. Creating new sounds. Doing something unique with the instruments and my voice. But I do have a sentimental fondness for blues ballads.

If you could sing with one famous band, who would it be?

Chevelle. I love their sound.

Black Wolf, huh? That means you may be the next Alpha of your Run. What’s that pressure like?

Intense. I’m in such a weird position right now. Alphas are traditionally Black Wolves, and the first born of a Black Alpha is almost always Black, too. But my oldest brother Bishop is Gray. He’s been training and preparing to be Alpha his entire life. He was ten when I was born, and he was fourteen when I shifted for the first time and kind of crashed the party by being Black. If I want to be Alpha, it’s traditionally my place to take it (after our father retires, obviously). But Bishop really wants it, and I’d hate to take it away from him, but since I sank my music career….yeah. Intense and confusing, definitely.

When you’re in your wolf form do you retain your human mind? Do you remember what you do as a wolf when you turn back to your skin form?

It’s a little complicated, but mostly yes. As skin, we’re always aware of our beast. When we shift our consciousness remains intact and in control, but our baser instincts are amplified. Memories remain, so I always know what I’m doing in both forms. The only time a loup garou cannot control their beast is if they have a forced shift. Forced shifts can happen for a few reasons. One of them is starvation. It forces the man to shift to beast, and the beast will attack anyone because all it knows if that it needs to eat. Another reason is extreme emotional duress. In forced shifts, the beast is in complete control and very rarely can they be pulled back. Usually the Alpha has to order their death for the safety of the run.

You’re a young, good looking wolf. What do you look for in potential mate?

Well, thank you. Um, I haven’t given the potential mate thing a lot of thought. I’m only twenty-two. She’d have to love music, obviously, because I’d probably give her private performances as often as she’d let me. If I do decide I want to pursue Alpha, she’ll need to be clever and strong, because she’ll have certain duties as the Alpha female. This is so weird to talk about.

Just how far down does your tattoo go?

Far enough to make things interesting.

She never saw this coming…

Brynn Atwood is a low-level Magus whose unpredictable precognitive powers have made her an outcast among her people—and an embarrassment to her highly-regarded father. After a frightening vision in which her father is murdered by a loup garou man, Brynn decides to prove herself by finding the killer, and stopping them at any cost.

Her target is Rook McQueen, the son of a small-town loup garou Alpha. Despite being the youngest of three, Rook is first in line to inherit the role of Alpha, a duty he isn’t sure he’s capable of fulfilling. When Brynn finally meets Rook, she doesn’t expect the attraction that draws her to him—and him to her.

No longer believing him a murderer, Brynn and Rook strike an alliance to find her father’s real killer. But when his older brother is targeted by an unknown enemy, Rook will have to choose between his growing feelings for Brynn and his duty as the future Alpha of his community.
