It's a lousy first day on the job for Nina Blackman. A patient, loopy from the anesthesia, bites her. At least he was cute. The next morning, Nina wakes up with a set of razor-sharp fangs, bionic vision, supersonic hearing, and a taste for blood. But there's a good explanation: it's her patient, Long Island vampire Greg Statleon. Is Nina willing to commit to one man for eternity, even if they are perfect for each other?

What I liked:

The humor and “pot shots” at vampire romance novels. Nina was led by Wanda and her PNR books.  All of the references to vampire romances had me laughing because I’ve read them all. I love that Dakota can poke fun at a genre that she writes.

Nina is like an M&M, she has a hard shell with a soft center. Her coping mechanisms from having her mother leave her over and over as child is to not let anyone in. She uses her potty mouth and sarcasm as tools to push people away. She doesn’t do long term relationships with men and she doesn’t do friendships. Until Marty and Wanda entered her life. And they see through her BS and calls her on it.

Thanks for Marty, Wanda and Greg we get to see that hard shell melted.

What Didn’t Quite Work For Me:

Nina. For the most part I she didn’t like her. It wasn’t that she has a potty mouth. I knew it from The Accidental Werewolf (book 1) that she cusses like a sailor. I was worried about Nina being the main character and I was right. She was a little over the top at times with her language. It wasn’t too ugly (for me) but I thought some of the words/phrases used instead of a plain f-bomb was cheesy at times. Nina did use f-bombs but it seems like Dakota Cassidy was given a limit as to how many times she could use it or decided to tone it down. One phrase I thought was funny in a cheesy why was “Jesus Christ in a mini shirt”.

Narration:

Meredith Mitchell is growing on me as the narrator. I think she will be spot on for Wanda in the next book,The Accidental Human. Out of the three friends Wanda’s voice stands out while Nina and Marty sounds the same to me. I can’t find the men in the series too sexy because Mitchell’s male voice is not that deep but with light series like this it doesn’t bug me that much.

Will I continue the series?

Yes. Although Nina was not my favorite character I already have books 3-6 on my phone to listen to. I’ll mix them in with my other audios so that I don’t burn out on the lighter feel.

Recommend:

Readers that enjoy light and snarky paranormal romances with sassy heroines that can’t stay out of trouble.
