Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a sexy bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

Magical Well-Written

Hounded is about a “boy “and his dog… Urban Fantasy style.

Why I listened:

After listening to Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey and The Asylum Tales series by Jocelynn Drake, I’ve been looking for another series told from a male’s POV. Then I saw how much Carmel (Rabid Reads) was enjoying The Iron Druid Chronicles on audio I knew I had to give it a try.

The Characters:

Oberon! Sometimes there’s a secondary character that steals the show and Atticus’s Irish wolfhound, Oberon is the one for Hounded (and I’m sure for the whole series).

Atticus is a druid and he has a magical connection with Oberon that allows them to talk to each other telepathically and their conversations are so funny it had me snorting while listening to them.

Don’t get me wrong it’s not all about Oberon (even if he is the best sidekick I’ve read in a long time). Atticus is a 2,1000 year old druid that looks like a college student. He runs a bookstore where you can get special teas. He knows how to swing a sword and he’s very good at using magic. I love that he can change shapes into different animals when the need calls for it. I’m sure that will make for interesting times in the future.

The Narration:

As much as I enjoyed Hounded, I’m not sure if I would have enjoyed as much if I had read it. Luke Daniels does an amazing job with bringing Atticus and especially Oberon to life. Truly, I could picture a dog every time Daniels spoke his lines. Some had me thinking “Which way did he go George?” and “I’ll pet him and squeeze him.” (If you grew up watching Bugs Bunny then you know what I’m talking about. LOL)

Luke Daniels also did the female voices very well and that’s one thing I look at when listening to a male narrator.

The Writing:

Kevin Hearne has created a complex world with entertaining characters that sucked me into the story within a matter of a few chapters. Hearne peppers his world with pop culture references like Oberon quoting South Park,”You will respect my authoritah.” And nods to Star Wars.

Favorite Quote/Scene:

You don’t even know if she really likes you,” Oberon said as we exited and I unlocked my bike.
“She could be doing her customer service routine and stringing you along in hopes of a big tip the next time you come in. With dogs you just go up and smell their asses and you know where you stand, it’s so much easier. Why can’t humans do that?”

Will I continue the series?

YES! I have the rest of the series on audio from different sales and gifted credits. I’m ready to binge on more Atticus and Oberon. I highly recommend Hounded to any Urban Fantasy fan. And to the audio junkies you should try it on audio, you won’t be sorry.
