Tattoo artist Ronnie Clark is counting the days until Valentine’s Day is over. Ronnie doesn’t do romance. She doesn’t do flowers or dates, and she sure as hell doesn’t do love—not anymore. Love leads to heartbreak, and she’s vowed never to let herself get hurt again.

Sergeant First Class Kale Emerson is home on his mid-tour leave from Iraq, but he only has one thing on his mind—returning to his soldiers to finish leading their mission. He’s dedicated to his men and to his country, and he’s not interested in getting wrapped up in a distracting relationship…but casual sex, that’s a different story. From the moment he sees Ronnie, he wants her. And he agrees to her terms—no romance, no fluff—just passion.

But as their sexual chemistry ignites, the lines of their arrangement get blurry, and Ronnie starts to push Kale away. And when Kale realizes he’s found his match in this razor-tongued, gorgeous woman who is hell bent against love, winning her heart could be the toughest battle he has ever fought.

I’ve been on a contemporary kick lately to help me get over my Urban Fantasy burn out. I saw The Valentine’s Arrangement up for review over at Audiojukebox.com and thought it would be a prefect listen for the VA-VA-Voom read-a-thon.

Also I’ve only read one book/series so far that focused around a tattoo artist, The Asylum Tales by Jocelynn Drake (which is UF) so I thought I’d try out a contemporary listen to see if I enjoyed it.

The Valentine’s Arrangement had great leading lady. Ronnie is a tough as nails chick that has built up walls around her heart after it being broken by her ex-fiancé who happens to be a soldier. She has a hardcore rule of not dating, especially soldiers. That’s when Kale enters the tattoo shop.

Kale is home from Iraq on forced R&R. He would rather be back over seas with his men where he is needed. Kale is looking to get his first tattoo and is shocked when he shows up for his appointment with Ronnie, the infamous tattoo artists his fellow soldiers has sent him to. He was not expecting Ronnie to be a chick much less a drop dead gorgeous one.

One thing leads to another and Kale and Ronnie are spending time together outside the tattoo shop. They decide to have fun with their attraction and keep it casual since either is looking for a relationship. That’s where The Valentine’s Arrangement comes in.

I went into the story thinking it would be a quick and hot listen but I was pleasantly surprised to find it had more than just a few hot sexy times under the sheets. Kelsie Leverich did a great job mixing in a suspense element with the romance. She created two leading characters I was drawn to and was totally invested in what happened to them.

Abby Craden’s voice sounded familiar to me when I heard it so I looked her up and she also narrated Kristen Painter’s House of Comarré series. While I didn’t care for her narration of that series I thought she brought Ronnie and Kale to life perfectly. Her voice is smoky enough to pull of Ronnie’s voice and Kale’s. It just goes to show that it takes the right book to bring out a narrators talent. While Abby’s narration didn’t work in one book for me I liked her narration job of The Valentine’s Arrangement very much and I will look at some more of her work.

If you’re looking for a quick romance with a couple that needs a little help learning to let people into their hearts with a touch of snark and grit then you should try The Valentine’s Arrangement by Kelsie Leverich. And I recommend it on audio to audio book listeners. I’ve the 2nd book, Feel the Rush on my ereader from Netgalley but if the audio is narrated by Abby I may wait and listen to it instead of reading.
